Frequently Asked Questions

DATE and TIME/MISSION
and PURPOSE

When is the concert and approximately how long will it run?

The 8th JustStories Concert will take place on Friday, April 16, 2010 at Maria High School. (This performance is by invitation only) and Saturday, April 17, 2010 for the general public. There are two performances open to the general public on April 17th:

  • 1 – 2:30 pm in Chinatown at St. Therese Chinese Catholic School 247 West 23rd Street, Chicago
  • 7:30-9:30 pm in Evanston at the SPACE 1245 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, IL (the same entrance as The Union Pizzeria)

What is the concert about?

The JustStories Storytelling Concerts are devoted to strengthening and honoring the human family. We will share stories of ethnic identity, immigration, race relations and the power of enduring stories and music to cross cultures and generations.

Our goal is to promote understanding and cooperation between people of diverse cultures and to celebrate our differences and commonalities. The concert is dedicated to hearing and seeing one another. When we see and hear each other, we can value each other. When we know someone else’s stories, it’s easier to accept, appreciate and understand them. This concert of stories will be energizing, empowering, thought provoking and, most of all, entertaining.

Who are the co-presenters?

This program is presented by Angels Studio, a communications ministry of the Society of the Divine Word, Techny, IL, and O’Halloran Communications with The Chinese Museum Foundation and SPACE: Society for the Preservation of Art & Culture in Evanston. The producers are Father Derek Simons, SVD and Susan O’Halloran, storyteller.

AUDIENCE

Who should come to the concert?

Students, Educators, Diversity Clubs, Community Service Clubs, Global Thinkers, Storytelling Fans, all lovers of story.

What age range may come to the concert?

The performances are for high school students through adult.

Why can’t I bring my children?

In talking about issues of race, immigration and so on, we may need to talk about discrimination and, sometimes, acts of violence. Your child may be fine, but having children in the audience can affect the tellers and other audience members. This concert provides a special time for adults and young adults to reflect on themes of cultural heritage and Insider and Outsider realities in the most respectful, uncensored way possible.

COSTS

How much are tickets?

At the Chinatown performance we will take a donation for the Chinese Museum Foundation. CMF is recovering from a fire. One to three floors of the museum may be renovated by then.)

At the evening performance in Evanston, the fee is $10.

How do I get my tickets?

Advance tickets are available at evanstonspace.com. Go to the bottom of the home page and click on "Buy Tickets". Find the JustStories event and click on "Buy". REVEREND ROBERT JONES

For over 20 years Robert Jones of Detroit has been a champion of American Roots music, with a special emphasis on traditional African American music. Spirituals, blues, work songs, field hollers, country music, folk songs, gospel and original songs are all a part of fabric of American Roots Music.  This is the music that gave the world jazz, R&B, bluegrass, rock and even Hip Hop.  This music also communicates history and tradition that goes far beyond mere music. Robert shows us the blending of American styles that can serve as a model for what is possible – celebrating both our unique gifts and our universal triumphs.

What types of stories will they tell?

This year’s concert will feature Nancy Wang premiering an original piece, Bittersweet: A Chinese American Daughter’s Legacy. Nancy was a JustStories Fellowship recipient this year and created this new story under the direction of Susan O’Halloran. Her husband and performing partner, Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo, will join us by adding a tandem, traditional Asian folk story to the mix and a little music too.

Robert Jones will blend music and stories to create a tapestry of American history and a celebration of the rich diversity that is America today. We’ll coax Robert’s wife, Sister Bernice, to share a few songs as well.

Is the program religious?

Tellers at times do share stories from their own faith traditions as well as other aspects of their and other’s cultural backgrounds. However, this concert is non-denominational.

Will there be storytelling products for sale?

Yes, the tellers will be selling their books, CDs and DVDs.
