A Message for Teachers and School Administrators

We all want to create welcoming and inclusive classrooms. We want our students to feel valued and respected and to learn how to value and respect people who are different from themselves. We know this will help all of our students learn better.

But we wonder whether or not we can create these ideal classroom environments. How can we take time to teach anything other than our content area? How can we teach something as broad as “diversity” and still teach what is required? How can we talk about these issues without upsetting some (or all) of our students? How do we, as teachers, become comfortable discussing these issues with our students?

Certainly teaching the topics associated with diversity and with anti-racism can be overwhelming and could potentially take over one’s classroom. Still, there are steps we can take as teachers to create inclusive environments where students’ differences are recognized and valued, where we create a community of learners ready to work together and able to handle issues of difference and disagreement.

Racebridges for Schools presents for your reflection and use four lesson plans, each comprised of a teacher guide and a student handout, to help you recognize and celebrate differences among your students, find common ground, and create a strong classroom community.
