2006 The BridgeBuilder Award

Rabbi Robert J. Marx

• The Society of the Divine Word and the Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs are proud to present the 2006 BridgeBuilder Award to Rabbi Robert J. Marx for his life’s work of fostering cooperation among people and institutions of all races and faiths.
  
• A fearless advocate for justice, Rabbi Marx marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Alabama, in Chicago, and, indeed, in the northern suburbs. Rabbi Marx was instrumental in helping found or develop many interfaith and interracial agencies, initiatives and Justice organizations through the 60s, 70s and 80s. Many of these organizations continue their good works of hope and unity today. Some of them have been:
  
  • The Jewish Council on Urban Affairs
  • The Chicago Academy of Religion and Mental Health
  • The Illinois Committee to Abolish Capital Punishment
  • The Chicago Conference on Religion and Race
  • The Leadership Council for Metropolitan Open Communities
  • Black-Jewish Dialogue
  • Catholic-Jewish Dialogue
  • The National Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice
  • The Chicago Interfaith Committee on Worker issues
  • Convener of an initiative: Parents Who Have Lost a Child
  • Founder and Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Hakafa in Glencoe, IL
    
• The BridgeBuilder Award recognizes the outstanding service of individuals who have built bridges of dialogue, understanding and cooperation between diverse groups and communities in Chicago’s northern suburbs. This honor affirms individuals who have not simply talked about unity, but have given time and talent in doing the deeds and actions that bring diverse people together. The BridgeBuilder Award also affirms individuals who are a model and hero for our younger generation.

Rabbi Marx, you are a blessing and challenge to many! Congratulations!
